EARMILK x Warner Bros. Present: Kimbra Remix Contest

4 years ago written by

THE CONTEST IS NOW LIVE. Here’s a quick Update on things:

There will be 20 mixes selected for the final round, an increase from the original plan of 10. Half of these will be chosen by Earmilk’s staff, the other ten being the most favorited, respectively. This route has been chosen to ensure that underground producers who don’t have as much “Public Sway” as larger artists still receive a fair chance, as well as helping ensure variety and quality to the results.

If you submitted a remix, now’s the time to start promoting it! You have seven days, then the results go in and the winners are announced. – Earmilk Staff

Attention aspiring producers, EARMILK is pleased to announce an opportunity that is sure to add some excitement to the humdrum of your daily activities. Attentive readers may recall that as we premiered our new website layout, EARMILK set a sort of “New Years Resolution”, vowing to provide its readers with a plethora of opportunities to win free goodies. Today’s contest sees Warner Bros. Records Inc, one of the the world’s most recognized and successful recording companies, team up with EARMILK to offer one hopeful producer an opportunity of a lifetime.

In anticipation of Kimbra’s forthcoming album Vows, EARMILK and Warner Bros. Records have decided to challenge all the bedroom-producers to put forward their best remix of Kimbra’s chart-topping single “Settle Down.” As compensation for your work, one lucky winner (Judged by Kimbra herself) will see their creation receive an official release on Warner Bros. Records UK, accompanied by a proper servicing campaign. For complete details, read on (or scroll down).

Kimbra Johnson, the New Zealand native better known simply as Kimbra, is gearing up for her US/UK debut,Vows, set to be released on May 22 through Warner Bros. Records. Vows has already received praise in New Zealand and Australia, scaling to the top 5 on the charts, becoming a Gold-Certified hit in the process. Already a household name in the US for her appearance on Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” Kimbra aims on enchanting American and English listeners with her soulful jazz-infused pop, reminiscent of times past and instilled with the quirky theatrics betoken of the alluring Kiwi.

To help stimulate some creativity and get the brain juices flowing, we also have an exclusive free remix EP featuring reworkings of Kimbra’s top songs. These up-and-coming Warner Bros. artists —Brenmar, Benjamin Damage, George Fitzgerald and Owsey— demonstrate the originality and vision needed to claim the top spot in the contest. George Fitzgerald stylishly combines the warmer, melodic sides of house and garage with the more heated, pounding drum patterns of dubstep and techno. Owsey has built up an enviable online following, collecting over half a million plays on his Soundcloud page and 200,000 YouTube views of his remix of Gotye’s Kimbra-featuring hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.” A Chicago nativeBrenmar now resides in Brooklyn, but his tracks clearly demonstrate his Chi-Town love of hip-hop, R&B, house and juke. Lastly, Benjamin Damage’s track “Deeper” represents one of the first true “Deep Rave” sounds. He also has seen collaborations with Doc Daneeka incorprated into sets of mainstagers such as Modeselektor. For those not partaking in the contest, feel free to download the Remix EP simply to enjoy the music.

Don’t hesitate any longer, your future release on Warner Bros. UK won’t create itself. Available below are all the stems for “Settle Down” and contest details needed to produce your song.

Comments to EARMILK x Warner Bros. Present: Kimbra Remix Contest

just as I was bragging on my personal Facebook that Kimbra follows me on Twitter, she posts a remix contest… #wow :D

    • Rip Van Dickle

      Dude, you are so cool.

  • Achima

I can’t unzip the file, keeps saying it’s corrupted, i’ve tried different unzipping programs, still the same response

    • Dietrich Von Bacon

Yo, I get the same thing. Will the download be fixed?

      • EARMILK

I’m going to go test it now, also asking one of our in-house djs to clean up the archive a bit :) simplify things for you a bit

        • Day Varia

Did it work?? Please update this asap! We all deserve at LEAST 10 (out of the original 20!) allotted days to complete this enormous task…

I’m just ambitious as hell and want a solid shot at it! Please let us know!
Good luck to everyone! :) Thanks

        • Day Varia

I got them at 5 AM today. Thanks!

  • Sean Michael

So THIS is the girl I saw perform at SXSW!  I will definitely consider entering this remix competition :)

  • schwabsauce

Good luck to all remixers – thank you Kimbra and Earmilk!  I’m looking forward to trying my hand at this and hearing what everyone comes up with.

  • Max Hajen Forsman

If we dont win the contest, can we still have the remixes up on our webpages/soundcloud etc (for free of course)?

    • Ronnie Evans

  • seriously

This is fucking STUPID. It’s a REMIX contest, NOT a promotion contest. With that said, WHY are you running it like a promotion contest? Lost respect, this is bull.

    • Ya..

Even though @seriously might be a bit too mad, I have to agree with his point.  The voting portion of the judging phases is unfair and I hope contest hosts can see that and don’t do it in the future.

      • Max Hajen Forsman

Well, they cant really listen through hundreds of submissions. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the only reasonable way I see of doing it.

        • Timmer

Well they shouldn’t be running it as a remix contest where as they say  “The Best” remix will be declared the winner. By allowing online voting (as they did during the Beyonce remix contest) you are going to end up with a so-so track winning the whole thing, just because they have a million facebook and soundcloud friends. I seen it happen so many times. These online contests which have great prizes, turn into nothing more than a virtual popularity contest.

That’s why we updated rules accordingly.

  • Toby

standard rubbish. predictable and safe. is this supposed to be the cutting edge of current music? no thanks.

  • No one

    fuck this. fuck facebook.

  • ZachKaiSmith

    wont unzip! Please help

What’s it saying. Error? What OS?

      • Jay

Zip file will not open…Please fix

  • James Jullies

after downloading it, it says i need a password. please help???

  • Mike L

its SO unfortunate that this contest relies heavily on the entrants “promoting” their own track. every time this happens we see people spamming everyone desperate for likes and comments. also gives artists who already have a following a massive advantage over people starting out.

    • Timmer

I agree 200%. These popularity contests are making me sick. Some guy on facebook already has 500 listens and 35 LIKES in less than 20 hours. WTF? I don’t have mega tons of listeners on my page and I don’t spam to get them. So how can a anyone compete against a crappy dubstep remix?  It use to be…THE BEST REMIX won. Now its “how many friends” you can round up to vote for you. If these artists who run these contests don’t have the time to listen to every track and let the public decide, then I won’t bother wasting my time either. I am glad you brought this up.

      • bdv

it used to be about the music

We’ve changed the rules accordingly. It was an early on oversight and we’re sorry that there was a time you felt that we’d be screwing the pooch – merci.

  • Melb Cbd

So do favourites before voting date begins?

  • Melb Cbd

I mean do favourites count before the 21st?

  • Benjamin Paul Crea add to your favorites to help me get to the next round. thnx pls….

  • Max Hajen Forsman

I’m quite confused by this. We’ve uploaded our track already, but since people already favorited it, how will you tell how many ‘new’ favoritings it got after the 21st? Should we remove the track and upload it again so people can favorite it again, but this time after the 21st? Isn’t it better to just count total amount of favorites? Also, do we have to name our track “Kimbra Remix Contest” like it says in the instructions? This doesn’t make sense in a lot of ways

  • Jake Hansen

so out of curiosity how will you be tracking the amount of favorites after May 21st are you just going to count all of the favorites before and then subtract them later or do you have a more sophisticated way of tracking them. also LOVE THIS CONTEST, i’ve had so much fun remixing this song, there’s few songs in which i feel so much freedom and expression in my remixes and this is definitely one of them :)

  • LABEL what the hell is going on?

    1 Grand Prize Winner

The Grand Prize Winner, as chosen by the Judges from all of the submissions, will:

    Receive $1,000

Be included on an official Kimbra release

Be featured on Kimbra’s Facebook Page and website

Receive a CD signed by Kimbra

    5 Honorable Mentions

The 5 Honorable Mentions, as chosen by the Judges from the 10 most popular submissions, will each:

Be featured on Kimbra’s Facebook Page and website

Receive a CD signed by Kimbra

    sorry now im REALLY CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jeff Miller

Another website is holding the exact same remix contest, any clarification as to which would be more of a legitimate competition by warner brothers?

  • Nugraha_marcellino

So what’s going on with the Indaba and you guys?

  • Jake Hansen

So it says that the 10 finalists will be judged by a Panel, would it be possible to know what the panel thought of our remixes even if we don’t win?

  • Jeff Miller

Regardless of how the contest is judged, I think it should be about having fun and loving to write or remix music, I have only 100 people on my souncloud and some who added me during another remix competition. I don’t care much if I win or lose, it’s about getting heard.

  • Bruce Brown

I’m discussing this contest here. Would appreciate any of your participation.

  • Karleighk

DJ Shadow listened to over 500 entries in his remix contest to get the highest quality results – he actually gives a shit about the music that will be released using his name…
Warner Bros doesn’t give a shit so long as it’s popular (ie sells) but I thought Kimbra would have more artistic accountability…

  • Blunt Instrument

We submitted our remix today before the cutoff date and it hasn’t been included in the final set – can you please check to make sure it will be included?
    Blunt Instrument

  • Jpromano78
  • Max Hajen Forsman

Guys, we uploaded our remix before the set time but it still isn’t included in the list, and I’ve seen Earmilk play it a few times in my stats so I know you’ve seen it as well. It would be greatly appreciated if you could put it back in there as I feel we had an honest chance of winning.

Link to the track: Cheers from Sweden!

  • Leigh Murray

Hi Earmilk, Are we allowed to pay for favourites on track submissions? I understand it’s not in keeping with the spirit of the event but I have a feeling some people have already done this.

  • Benjamin Paul Crea

you gotta respect earmilk for the way they ran this contest. so many people are posting negative things about it but the fact is they listened and took action. when the first round of people complained about the qualifier they made it dead easy for 20 out of 100 or so to get through to the judging round. i think that was extremely generous and only made their job harder as judges. some contests have 500 entries! anyone pissing and moaning about this really should wake up and smell the coffee. if you couldnt get enough votes and the judges didn’t select you i dont think you tried hard enough to pull in votes or made a good enough remix. its that simple. i spent 2 days with the begging for votes thing, its all i had time to allocate because i’m busy at the moment. it really wasnt that hard considering no one got into the 10’s of thousands in the votes. i also had full faith in ear milk to sort out the best remixes.

the other thing i really respect is the pace of this contest. nothing worse than something being dragged on for months and months. bang bang bang is much more fun.

do you have any more contests coming up earmilk?

  • Evan Isais

I need the stems pack, can it be uploaded or can I have a link to download it?
