Nexus Tunes [Interview + Earmilk Exclusive]
01.22.2013 Lindsay Herr

19 year-old Myles Shear goes by the name Nexus. He is a young producer out of Miami, Florida who likes to say he adds a “Nexus Vibe” to his music. With an emphasis on melody and an appreciation for piano this wunderkind is a name to get familiar with in 2013. Today we have an interview and exclusive Earmilk mix from the young producer.

EARMILK: Looking back, what was your first experience with music?
Nexus Tunes: When I was 15 or 16 I saw my friend Matthew Postrel producing in Ableton and wanted to expand from just DJing. I quickly bought a copy of Ableton and began my career as a Producer.
LH: In your own words how would you describe your sound?
NT: I like to describe my music as melodic first and foremost. I think that it’s important to build music around a melodic idea and then add the influence of a hard drop or rhythmic bass line. I try to build a song that tells and story and build each part with twist that you didn’t see coming (a song within a song if you will).  I’m trying to produce interesting, intelligent music to bring a new vibe to the EDM scene.
LH: Where did the moniker come from?
NT: Nexus by definition means a series of connections. I choose this name because to me music is all about connecting and collaborating; I’m not one to sit in my room alone and make music all day. I’ve connected with many great people through nexus and am stoked to see what connections have yet to come.
LH: What's the music scene like down in Florida?
NT: Depends on where you are, but in general, Florida likes to hear a little bit of everything.
LH: Top tracks at the moment?
NT: Dillion Francis – Fireworks Bootleg, Coyote Kiss – Seven Lions Cover, Mumford & Sons - Roll Away Your Stone, Enter Shikari – Meltdown, Aphex Twin – Crying In Your Face
LH: Any musical guilty pleasures?
NT: I enjoy Justin Timberlake. What can I say he has some good productions.
LH: What inspires you as an artists?
NT: I think what inspires me the most is going to shows and festivals. I see other producers sharing their music to thousands of people and it assures me that this is what I am meant to do.
LH: What can we expect from you in 2013?
NT: I am currently working on a remix for Robotic Pirate Monkey, which will be coming out sometime in February. I am also starting to work on my first EP this year. On a different note, I have building a live show to take on tour. No more DJ set. We’re talking Ableton Live, Keyboards, Beat Machines; the whole deal. So if all goes as planned that is a big thing happening in 2013.
LH: Any parting words for our readers?
NT: Thank you all for your support. It is impossible to get out there and do what I love doing without your help and support. Sure I can put music out and play it here and there, but if the fans aren’t there… well then I don’t have much to show for my hard work. So thank you and keep a look out for Nexus in 2013! It’s looking like a big year!
