Dance music industry leader Sean Tyas has been making some major moves recently. Releasing two trance hits in a matter of weeks at the end of 2013 including our favorite "Lose My Logic," collaborating with up and comers like Tomas Heredia, and now today making some major announcements, it looks like 2014 is going to be one of the biggest in Tyas's career.

Today Tyas made a huge announcement: he's going to release his first artist album ever, out on his own Tytanium Recordings that will now be under the Black Hole Recordings umbrella. To celebrate this exciting news, we asked Sean to share something special with us – something of his own personal taste that we normally don't get to see. The result is a high energy mini mix featuring his favorite drum and bass tracks for your listening pleasure. Also on the heels of this exciting news, we got to chat with the artist himself about the huge year he's got to look forward to.

EARMILK: What's your earliest memory of loving music?
Sean Tyas: I think every musician would say they’ve loved music since as long as they can remember; I guess I’d rather say my earliest memory of loving electronic music was when I was 10. My uncle had given me a mixtape, and I had 3 mixes of a classic track by Apotheosis, O Fortuna. The tape had no label on it, so I didn’t even know the name of it.  I remember calling them different “versions,” instead of mixes, because I had no concept of what a remix even was! What I did know, however, was that I just loved this music; I loved these sounds I’d never heard before and the energy that was encompassed throughout.
EARMILK: Who inspired you to make music into your career?
Sean Tyas: I think there are a few.  Moby was a huge influence with his music in my high school years.  I can’t think of how many times I must have listened to his “Everything is Wrong” album.  To this day, I don’t think anyone touches that album; the ideas were so fresh and it had had a unique melodic color.  The Prodigy were and still are hugely inspirational, though Paul van Dyk was the “direct cause” that sparked my interest in actually learning how this music was made. That ultimately lead to me trying it on my own.
EARMILK: How has your approach to music changed over the years?
Sean Tyas: I don’t think it has, really. The techniques of the engineering side have matured, of course. Personally, the (lead) melody is what I’m all about, which is always in front, so that’s always done first.  I can then get to creating the harmonies and other elements.  Traditionally drums come later, but I’ve been getting more into starting the drum work sooner, because the current breed of plugins available just makes them sound so fat!
EARMILK: What's your biggest inspiration today?
Sean Tyas: I get a ton of inspiration simply from listening to other music. I love listening to chillout and ambient music, and am starting to get into more acoustic stuff. At the same time I’ll listen to an older album like The Prodigy – “Experience,” for example, which will remind me why I started doing this in the first place. That kind of thing fuels me like I’ve just started again.

EARMILK: The trance scene is really dominated by artists from Europe. How is it to be a successful American trance DJs – as a minority?
Sean Tyas: It’s a crowded industry.  Well, at first it seems so. It gets smaller when you start to realize who is and who “isn’t” doing the work (if you can read between the lines there). Personally, I feel really proud to have come this far, but I’m not anywhere close to where I want to be. There’s so much more that I want to accomplish, especially this year, so I’m working in overdrive to get there, and I won’t stop once I do reach those goals. As far as trance goes, yes, it’s weird being one of the few Americans in the genre, but it’s nice to be accepted in what was arguably started by the Dutch, the Brits, and the Germans.
EARMILK: Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming producers?
Sean Tyas: Absolutely! Learn your craft. Be one of the respectable guys.  When you think you’ve learned everything, just know for a fact–you’ve only just begun.  The BEST part of this as a career is that you’re never ever even close to learning all you can learn. There’s always something else for you to improve on. I love that; if you remember that, there will be no stopping you.
EARMILK: Tell us a bit about the big announcement that's happening today – what are you looking most forward to from this?
Sean Tyas: It feels good to be able to finally talk about this! There are two things. First is the news that my label, Tytanium Recordings, has become a part of the growing Black Hole Recordings family. I’ve been wanting to take the label further, so I’ve got 2 guys working with me now, and partnering with Black Hole is going to give us a much wider platform. So many labels come and go, but Black Hole has stayed in the top tier for 15 years, and that’s a testament to the mastermind behind it, Arny Bink (owner of Black Hole Recordings). I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves in this industry.
Secondly, I’m very excited to finally announce I’ve inked a deal with Black Hole Recordings to release my first studio album, with a second one to follow. I’ve finally committed myself to writing an album, and it’s all I can think about every day. Like I said in the last answer, there is no end to learning. I’ve learned so many new techniques over the last 2 years, and now I’m able to use every last one on this piece of work. I can also improve on my weak areas, and strengthen my sharper aspects of production.  I could’ve just thrown 15 tracks together and put it out on Tytanium, but committing to Black Hole and knowing it’s going to be put out there in a way that we couldn’t by ourselves at Tytanium is what I truly needed to take things to the next level. I think it’s going to be great, and I hope when it’s all said and done, you will agree, too.
EARMILK: Thank you for making this mix for us! We love to see artists step outside of their comfort zone a little bit. Are you a big fan of drum & bass?
Sean Tyas: Huge. It gives me a tremendous amount of energy and gets me really pepped up.  When I was on a running kick, I could NEVER set foot outside without a mix or two loaded up in my iPhone.  It has a complexity and a character all of its own.
EARMILK: Awesome to hear! Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Sean Tyas: Well, I’d like to give 2 brief shout outs: First, to my wife Mirella, who puts up with so much sh*t from, stupid hours in the studio, me on my phone at all times of the day. She’s had to go through a lot of stress with me being gone, or in the rare instances where the unimaginable occurs while I am gone; like the time I was on an airplane during the birth of my 2nd daughter Kyla on the way to Thailand to play (in all fairness she came 2 weeks early, but still!).  And the next is a thank you to the one3twoPR team for believing in me and pushing me (and I use the word pushing, but more like “shoving”) in the right direction in such a short time.  You know who you are and where you stand, thank you.
