Matt Cutler, better known by his Lone moniker, has become a producer worthy of much anticipation, consistently coming up with fun-filled combinations of techno, house, and hip-hop. Since 2007 he’s released nearly an album a year, and 2014 is no exception; he’s just announced a new album, Reality Testing, out June 17 via R&S Records. With this news comes the album’s lead track, the giddy sugar rush of “2 Is 8.” Cutler is certainly in hip-hop mode on this one; while he often sounds like he’s partying somewhere deep in outer space, here the vibe is definitely one for walking down the block, although prancing might be a better word. One can imagine J Dilla up in the sky somewhere, grinning ear-to-ear, nodding along knowingly. While this is against the direction Lone's been going as of late, don’t expect Reality Testing to necessarily be a hip-hop-centered album. Matt Cutler has always been an anything-goes type producer, the only safe prediction is that Reality Testing will surely contain some adventurous ideas.
