[02.26.2010]Wax: Free Song Friday Episode TWO w/Lack of Afro @bigwax

Author: montrey

We are big fans of Wax over here on Earmilk and luckily he’s begun releasing one free track every Friday from his pretty massive collection of tracks. Episode Two features a beat by Lack of Afro who puts it down with some super funky vibes and of course Wax murders the vocals. The track is called “Suspicious Glow” and it’s from the album My Groove, Your Move. Wax really needs to be known worldwide so I’m gonna use my little influence to let those know that don’t know. Check out the track below and also check out the video which gives a little introduction to the song and talks about Lack of Afro’s work.

[12.29.2009]Sugar & Gold – “Neighborhood” [New Video]

Author: montrey

Ready to see a pretty funky video? Prepare yourself for the new video by Sugar & Gold for the song entitled “Neighborhood”. These guys are a indie/electro/funk/psychedelic group that hails from San Francisco. Some of their music might be a little “out-there” for most but then there’s songs like this one that are downright catchy, light-hearted and unique in its own way. The video looks like something you’d see in the 1980’s but somehow works for the song. Check out the video below and make sure you go in with an open mind.

She won’t put up a fight
And when you come home back to see her
She’ll let you stay for the night
She might not give you head
But she might let you share her bed

[12.16.2009]Dam-Funk – Mirrors

Author: JAHN DOUGH

Dam Funk

Stones Throw is just one of those incredible labels, that it seems like, can do no wrong when it comes to shelling out good music. With almost 12 years under their belt, the label has managed to bring forth a few legendary enigmas at the forefront of the hip-hop genre, as well as drop some undeniable classic discography (MADVILLIAN anyone?). Los Angeles “Ambassador of Boogie”, aka Dam-Funk only adds to the polished resume with his own brand of modern-funk. A student of past funkateers such as Prince and Roger Troutman, Dam’s Toeachizown is a 5 LP, conceptual dissertation, firmly solidifying his place in the genre. “Mirrors” is just one of the many funky, progressive electro jams out of the set, and he recently happened to drop a video for it. Check it out below. More after the jump.

[12.04.2009]PUTS x VANS – Hit the Top Contest Winners Announced

Author: montrey

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of People Under The Stairs here on Earmilk. They recently had a contest where they had contestants take a song from their latest album and come up with the best and most unique mix. PUTS goes on to explain their criteria:

I appreciate the number of dance and house remixes that were done but a few of them seemed to lay the vocals on as an afterthought. If the rhymes aren’t riding the beat, I feel like the song is better off as a beat and not a “remix”. On the same note, the breakdown was definitely the curveball in the remix. And sometimes everything was going well up until that point but he beat never recovered coming out of it. I know it was a difficult thing to hook up but hey, if we had done that and it was a fixed tempo all the way through, any person with any beat could have laid the vocals over it and been done. At least this showed who put the extra effort into the project.

They track they ended up picking was done by DJ Doc Delay and its definitely a super funky remix that deserves first place. Check out the track below:

[11.19.2009]Say Hello to Vokab Kompany!

Author: montrey

I recently got a chance to go to a Matisyahu concert here in San Diego but what I ended up finding was something even more kosher. I got to the concert pretty late and didn’t get to hear all the other bands that played before the featured guest but luckily the first group I heard play that night just so happened to be one of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed. The group i’m talking about is Vokab Kompany. They are local to the San Diego area and definitely rep their city very well. When i first entered the arena I could faintly hear them performing and as I got closer and closer I heard a mix of sounds i hadn’t really heard before. It was a mix of hip-hop, rap, electro, funk, reggae, 80’s…you name it and all coming from one band. This is what made me immediately appreciate the performance that had been set before me.

I’m a huge fan of groups that try to mix genres together that don’t necessarily belong together and these guys prove that it can be done well. If you listen to their music you will see the eclectic mix of genres and styles that seem to come together flawlessly. Now, it wasn’t JUST their music that caught me but also their performance. These guys really know how to move a crowd and they really try to put you in a trance with all the layering they put in their songs. The performance I witnessed at this festival really just blew me away and I really wasn’t ready for it.
