SO…you’ve finally made it through the week. Some of you will probably go out for drinks, some of you will go to the movies and some of you will indulge in more “herbal” remedies. If so do it to the soundtrack of the homie Flick Brown. This obscure hip-hop track was produced by Akello Light. Honestly, I’ve never heard of either of these cats before, but Im glad I was introduced. Apparently the track below, “High Ridin” will be on an upcoming mixtape release by Flick entitled Pure Frailty. If this isnt enough, maybe cute chicks smoking weed will be. Check out the “Light It Up” video after the jump. Big up to Lala Sugafoot for the track & visuals.

[12.29.2009]Sugar & Gold – “Neighborhood” [New Video]

Author: montrey

Ready to see a pretty funky video? Prepare yourself for the new video by Sugar & Gold for the song entitled “Neighborhood”. These guys are a indie/electro/funk/psychedelic group that hails from San Francisco. Some of their music might be a little “out-there” for most but then there’s songs like this one that are downright catchy, light-hearted and unique in its own way. The video looks like something you’d see in the 1980’s but somehow works for the song. Check out the video below and make sure you go in with an open mind.

She won’t put up a fight
And when you come home back to see her
She’ll let you stay for the night
She might not give you head
But she might let you share her bed

[11.19.2009]Lightning Bolt – Earthly Delights [Album Review]

Author: Tommy

lightningbolt live

After four years without a release, the sprawling epic menace that is Lightning Bolt is back with a new record. If you are familiar with this band then you already know what you are in store for and this album delivers in full force what Lightning Bolt fans have grown to love about the band, heavy chop-shop bass guitar, and spastic beats.

For those that don’t know, the band consists of the two-piece of Brian Gibson on bass and Brian Chippendale on drums and distorted-ass vocals. The band formed out of the Fort Thunder noise scene in Providence Rhode Island in the late 90’s and is arguably the most influential band to come out of the scene as they have helped progress noise music in general throughout the decade.

This album in particular strays just slightly from its predecessor Hypermagic Mountain that was released in 2005. While that album saw more of the high register shredding from Brian Gibson, this record shows Gibson’s riffs as driving swampy steamrollers that stay for the most part in a gritty lower register. Chippendale’s drumming goes along with this motif in that much of his beats are straight pummeling instead of the crazy sporadic beats that come out of Hypermagic Mountain (although there are plenty of moments where the drumming goes out of control, in a good way). With the opening track “Sound Guardians” you get the latter out of Chippendale, those frantic snare hits and unyielding kick drum are going a mile a minute while Gibson’s bass chugs along bringing a full dose of the heavy. The next track “Nation of Boar” (my personal favorite on this record) you get a sense of the riff based straight driving momentum that stands out next to the spastic rhythms of the majority of their catalog. Most of the album is recorded by the same engineer as their previous three records who does a great job capturing the power and precision of this band, but a couple of the songs were recorded by Lightning Bolt themselves. These songs give off a pleasantly more gritty sound similar to Chippendale’s solo project Black Pus and brings some extra variety to the already massively dense record.

This record has been in the making for a long time, I remember hearing some of these songs for the first time when I went to see them in New York two years ago. Finally it is here, printed, in all its glory. Anyone who has an interest in this band will not be disappointed, and if you have not heard them, this is actually a good record to start with, it covers a great variety of the sound the band has been developing over the past decade. If you decide to buy it, cause come on, we all know you download music ferociously, then get it on vinyl, it has a sweet etching by Chippendale on the last side of the second LP and the artwork is incredible!

[11.13.2009]Georgia Anne Muldrow – Run Away

Author: JAHN DOUGH

Georgia Anne Muldrow

Georgia Anne Muldrow is arguably the most controversial figure, musically, to grace the soul/R&B genre since Erykah Badu brought us Baduizm back in ‘97. I was first introduced to songstress in 2007 with Olesi: Fragments of an Earth, a release from the ever renowned Stones Throw label that had been released a year prior. What I heard, simply, blew me away. From it’s tribal beat compositions to it’s experimental psych-funk tinges and Georgia’s afro-centric/futurist lyrics, it was easily one of the most intriguing records I had listened to that year.

A quick look at her past, and it should come to know surprise why Georgia’s music is so eclectic stylistically. Her father was an instrument inventor for Eddie Harris, one of the most underrated jazz greats, who had a knack for experimenting and had a hand in birthing Jazz-funk. Her mother Rickie Byers was a vocalist in The Pharoah Sanders Ensemble. she also had a couple of solo efforts herself.

“Run Away” is a track from her latest album entitled Early. While this may seem like a new song to those just being put on to Georgia, the album is actually a collection of music that she wrote between the ages of 17 and 19. That may be where she had the idea to make the video into an old 70’s cartoon format. I’d recommend checking out some of her older work before listening to this album because you can hear the music transform into what it is now. I have left a few tracks from Olesi for your listening pleasure after the jump, enjoy.

[10.21.2009]Flaming Lips – Dark Side of The Moon/”Eclipse” Cover [Interview+Performance]

Author: jsully

Flaming Lips

There has been some buzz going around about The Flaming Lips making a cover for Pink Floyd’sDark Side of the Moon” album. I think it sounds like a pretty good idea…but it’s just hard for me to understand why they want to do an album pretty much no one on the planet could make better. They do a pretty good cover of “Eclipse” her at KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. They stopped by to talk a little about their recently released album, ‘Embryonic‘.

The band did reveal a few details about the cover album, but no release date. In the meantime, check out the video here! They start rocking on Eclipse towards the end, they play one of their tracks first. So, either listen or skip through.

Enjoy.

[10.11.2009]Warpaint – Billie Holiday [Tour Dates]

Author: jsully

warpaint

I was stumbling through one of my favorite blogs, that of graphic designer / ambient music maestro Scott Hansen (also known as Tycho for his music) the ISO50 blog, and came across something I couldn’t ignore. I’ve mentioned him and his blog multiple times in my posts, I tend to find a lot of good music from it.

Warpaint is a 4 piece “psychadelic” group, which I would personally label as “experimental” if you could label it at all. I guess those sometimes have the same meaning anyways, so I won’t harp. But, this band, is literally amazing. I think something along the lines of Portishead mixed with Sonic Youth. All 3 of the females in the band do vocals, which make their sound big and broad but with such a delicate touch. They have this big low end swell but with perfect notes over it to make it nice and slow and dreamy. Plus, these girls vocals together just take you to a different place. The one that caught me is titled “Billie Holiday” off their album “Exquisite Corpse“. So sick.

I’m gonna drop 3 songs, listen to all of them. Also gonna post up tour dates, just in case your city is gettin’ lucky. Really good music. Enjoy.
