Album Review

brandUn DeShay - All Day DeShay AM [Album Review]

For a moment, or rather from this day forth, let your mind forget about this man's association with the OFWGKTA camp or whatever "beef" that may have ensued. None of that is pertinent at all; to either partys' music, to hip-hop and most importantly, yourself. brandUn DeShays' debut album can't be measured by the kind of pithy quid pro quo you would find on the album of a bitter artist. He has no reason to be bitter. Nor is it some magnanimous, self-abasing metaphorical white flag. He has no reason to apologize....

Birdy Nam Nam - Defiant Order [Album Review]

French electro/turntablism foursome Birdy Nam Nam's third LP, Defiant Order, produced by Para One, dropped September 19 on Jive Epic. As a first time listener of the group, I'm sort of surprised that the name isn't more widespread. It certainly seems like they have a reputation within their particular circles, because, well, they're pretty freaking good. Defiant Order is a difficult album to classify. The first thing I picked up on was a particular breed of clean, clear production that I usually associate...

Scroobius Pip - Distraction Pieces [Album Review]

My first experience of Scroobius Pip came a few years back when I stumbled in on a live show. Upon Scroobius Pip reciting his first line, the crowd went from a buzzing mash of chattering heads to attendant silence within 30 seconds. Since that fateful day, I believe it was a Thursday, a nice day, I...

Ben Westbeech - There's More To Life Than This [Album Review]

After laying on the free tracks, mixes, acoustic covers and various other enticing treats, Ben Westbeech was finally ready to drop his sophomore album onto the world. On hearing that Ben's first, Bristol bred, souled-out album was being followed up with a "House Inspired" album that was intended...

Welder - Florescence [Interview/Album Review]

Fans of independent labels like Ninja Tune, Warp and Planet Mu may recognize Brendan Angelides from his work as Eskmo moreso than his work as Welder, but he's a prolific artist under both of these personas, identities that he keeps quite separate, as he discusses in Earmilk's interview...

Modeselektor - Monkeytown [Album Review]

I've always thought of Modeselektor as a dance group first and foremost; such is the curse of being danceable, it's easy to get sorted into that particular category. But just because you're danceable doesn't mean you can't expand beyond being pure dance music and cross over into intelligent...

Jan Driver - Amatilda [Album Review]

One of the biggest (and perhaps least touted) perks of writing for a sick-ass music blog is hearing about new music you might not otherwise have stumbled upon from your colleagues (should I instead refer to them as something more casual, like my "homeslices" or "bronuggets"? "Colleagues" feels...

Gui Boratto - III [Album Review]

Having just seen Brazilian minimal techno extraordinaire Gui Boratto for the first time at Electric Zoo in New York this weekend, there was really no better time for me to check out his new album, III (out September 13 in North America on Kompakt) than now, when I am still riding the afterglow of...
