RETRO is all about the future but he’s looking back to “1946” for his latest heat. The 22-year-old’s new release is taken from The Six, his forthcoming mixtape which will also feature “Resist”, a big track which we featured on EARMILK last month. Busy, unorthodox and gloomy, “Resist” channelled RETRO’s hometown influences of J Dilla and OutKast. While the all-important edge is still here, “1946” spells a departure from heavy synths and the Atlanta-based rapper’s vast lyrical skillset is allowed to flex over a minimal vintage piano-driven beat.
There are of course some horns and vocal tweaks thrown in for good measure and features from Jugg and G5 definitely introduce enjoyable energy, but the final product of “1946” is a simple one; dope lyrics executed with a dynamic flow carefully laid down on to a quirky beat. The Six, RETRO's follow-up to The Average College Kid is scheduled to drop this summer so look out for that.
