American singer-songwriter David G. Smith has released his new title track, "Hero Street," for the upcoming PBS Docuseries Hero Street. The folk and blues-inspired single takes a long-forgotten historical story and reimagines it for a new generation.
The theme of "Hero Street" centers on a story of eight Mexican-American soldiers who gave their lives and everything they had to build a better life. From Smith, the story is told through the eyes of the very ones these brave men sought to protect. Smith lays the groundwork for a historic telling of a moment in history where community matters.
With his upcoming 12th album, Hero Street, out this June, Smith spoke about the importance of the new title track.
“It all started during the Mexican Revolution,” says Smith. “Mexico’s being torn apart by war. World War I starts up, and there’s a labor shortage in the U.S., so the Rock Island Railroad puts the word out that they’ll move people up from Mexico to the Quad Cities, where I live. Folks are making this trip up the ‘Devil’s Highway’ and losing family members along the way. That road is still there. They work in these railway yards, and life is better for them…"
